Editing Techniques

Splicing

Splicing usually occurs in horror films prior to a character being killed off for the shock factor. This is typical of the horror genre as it fulfils the suspense building up to the jump scare. Splicing usually manipulates in and out of diegetic and non diegetic sound. For example, below is a trailer for the upcoming horror film "Happy Death Day" where towards the end of the trailer you can see a slowed down form of splicing used to tell the narrative in a quicker fashion. We will implement a similar technique into our short film, with clowns popping in and out of black screens.

Juxtaposing

A common theme throughout our short film is the idea of good and evil. This is presented to the audience in the form of El Cucuy and the small boy Jamie. Juxtaposition is a symbolic filming technique used to connote difference and conflict. The image below demonstrates juxtaposition being used in a poster, although it isn't horror themed it effectively demonstrates how this technique presents the ideas of confrontation which can be implemented into our short film. In the scenes where Jamie and El Cucuy are in the school, this technique will be used to symbolise how now the two character's have even power, which deflects from El Cucuy's superiority being presented prior to this scene.
